When I decided to write my songs, I did not have the confidence or the funds to walk into a professional studio on day one. I had lyrics I had written by hand, instincts I trusted, and knowledge I learned from recent songwriting tutoring from a professor at the Maine College of Art. I deepened my understanding of song structure, tempo, timing, chord progression, melody, and the exact feeling I am trying to convey.

A musician friend introduced me to Suno, a platform that helps me iterate music as I listen and write. I write my lyrics the old-fashioned way, by hand. I keep refining the words until the flow and melody feel right. I use AI to help me iterate the sound with layers, texture, instrumentation, and voice.

I understand why the music industry is so fired up right now. An article published in The Atlantic recently explored the artistic and technological impact of AI on the music industry, and the piece spells it out plainly. AI platforms are accused of training their models on artists’ copyrighted music without permission. Major labels are suing companies like Suno and Udio over it. I want to be clear. I do not condone anyone stealing an artist’s work. What my musician friends are feeling right now is real.

Yet, I also see a profound opportunity for expansion. Every time a new technology has a major impact on an industry, emotional reactions arise that contribute to legal action. Eventually, industries evolve into new ways of thinking about and expressing their businesses.

I have experienced this myself more than once. Back in 1993, I founded a travel company. Travel agents are a clear example of technological disruption. For years, they made their living as intermediaries in airline booking systems. Then the internet arrived, and the entire business model fell out from under them almost overnight. I cannot tell you how many of my competitors insisted that no one would ever book their own travel. The ones who could not adapt simply disappeared.

In constant iteration, I changed our company name to Hurley Travel Experts, because that word, experts, was the whole point. The intuitive and easy stuff went to the websites. The big international trips went to the experts. Those who knew the travel industry as it iterated turned into true destination advisors, and we grew significantly in an industry that had to undergo a complete 180. We did not just survive those scary times, we thrived.

Navigating a changing world, I also contributed to the family-owned fine furniture company Thos. Moser. We had to pivot in several ways to survive and ultimately thrive. When manufacturers began copying the designs and producing them more cheaply in China, we reinvented ourselves. We expanded into contract work, proudly embracing a “Built in the USA” ethos while furnishing libraries, universities, and presidential libraries. Every living U.S. president owns our furniture, as do two popes.

We also developed the “Customer in Residence Program” to sell an experience, not simply a piece of furniture. People from all over the world can spend a week at our workshop in Maine, where they are paired with a craftsman and build a piece of furniture of their own. It has been a life-changing experience for both the craftsman and the customer. At Thos. Moser, our Computer Numerically Controlled machines never replaced real craftsmanship. The technology handled the heavy cutting, allowing our makers to pour themselves into the design and finish, focusing on the human relationships behind the business.

The thread running through every aspect of industry is the same in all these stories. Technology takes over the mechanical parts, making the human part matter more, not less. Humans, as sensuous beings immersed in industry, offer taste, story, feeling, passion, relationships, late nights, and refusal to quit, the things a real person actually brings to the work.

I have thought about CGI, computer-generated imaging, and its effect as visual expression. People are aware that these images are rendered on a computer, yet they still choose to participate because the experience is real. Watching CGI-created films resonates through the senses in emotionally evocative ways.

That truth is exactly why my investors and I created Limbic Studios. We named it after the limbic system, the intelligence of the brain that synapses communication in regulation of emotion, memory, and feeling. It is vital in the processing of meaning before reason ever arrives. The limbic brain does not understand language. It does not know the words “CGI” or “AI-generated.” Intricately connected to the autonomic nervous system, it knows how something makes you feel. That is the part I am writing for.

AI can be a useful tool. However, it does not have a soul, is not aware like humans, cannot sense through a body, and cannot replace emotion, passion, or the exquisite nature of human touch. Right now, AI is an efficient way for me to gather inputs, but I know it will not convey my story the way I create it, from the heart.

I make music for the people who will listen. It is the collaborations, energy, and heart poured into the process that makes the music land and stay in people’s awareness. I was inspired and determined to prioritize human expertise, which led me to Parachute Music Studios in Auckland, New Zealand, a recording and songwriting studio and non-profit that supports musicians holistically. Their expression is rooted in community practice, with evolution, innovation, and reinvention as an ethos.

I will soon be in receipt of six brand-new, studio-produced songs made with amazing local musicians in New Zealand. Parachute Music’s founder, Mark de Jong, and my producer have been incredible partners. I feel the whole team at Parachute took a risk on me. At the end of this month, I am going back to Auckland for more studio time with my producer, to focus on songwriting, melody creation, and the development of soundtrack songs to accompany my novels. Every song is human-written, recorded, and produced.

Those who know me, have heard my story, and listened to my songs feel deeply connected. They cry, get goosebumps, and see their own lives reflected in what I express. That is why I love sharing this creativity, and I see the music industry’s evolution as part of my contribution.

Reinvention is not something to fear; it is an invitation. It has been my journey in the shift of a world unveiling.

Gracen Thorne Unveiled is a sensuously immersive transmedia story world—a full sensory experience composed of novels, original music, and visual content, inspired by real people, places, and experiences, yet reimagined as fiction. It unfolds in an ongoing revelation exploring love, authentic connection and consciousness.

Old journals filled with poems and unfinished lyrics resurfaced, and the act of turning those words into a book and songs became an evolution of self-discovery, uncovering the truth now articulated through the art of Gracen Thorne.

What initially took shape as my first novel, has now widened into something far more expansive: a journey of healing, an inquiry into love, freedom, and identity, and what it means to be wholly human, not separate. It captures the passage from analog life in the 1960s into our AI-shaped digital renaissance.

What I’m creating has never been done before, at least not this way. I felt a calling to reinvent how a book could be experienced, to carry the stories of the past into an evocative musical soundtrack, so that you can actually experience a chapter as a song.

The books hold the complete journey; the music evokes the emotions within the story, and the visual content creates the atmosphere. The invitation is to remember.

This is not a story for women alone.

Gracen’s story, immersed in sensuous original soundtracks, traces the lives of three indelible souls connected across lifetimes, exploring questions about life.

You will experience Isaac, a Black British musician who lived on the streets of London as a teenager, spent years homeless, and went on to become a world-class performer. You will get to know Jakob, a Polynesian man of deep faith with a humble past, who became a world-class athlete.

From the outside, each of them appears to have everything. They are impressive, successful, magnetic, and possess wealth and achievements that others admire; however, underneath the surface, there’s an unraveling accompanied by a growing sense of disconnection and separation.

Unfortunately, behind the veil, we are all defined by what we do and how others perceive us. Like most of us, they are still seeking and asking the same questions many people ask when they have achieved their goals but still feel a quiet, persistent longing:

• Is there more to life, or is this all there is?

• What is it like to forget who you are? What is it like to not feel present in life?

• What happens when the ego speaks so loudly that it clouds the real you?

In finding yourself, you can only lose who you are not.
